Good News for Free Speech

While on the one hand Senators are threatening free speech on the radio, on the other hand there was good news from the Supreme Court today.

The Court significantly weakened McCain-Feingold's limits on free speech prior to elections: "The court, split 5-4, upheld an appeals court ruling that an anti-abortion group should have been allowed to air ads during the final two months before the 2004 elections." The Court ruled the law "unreasonably limits speech and violates the group's First Amendment rights."

Unfortunately, the Bush Administration had argued in support of McCain-Feingold, which the President regrettably signed into law. The Administration "urged the court to ban the ads, arguing that they were meant to influence the elections, not lobby the senators."

I believe history will show that support of McCain-Feingold was one of the low points of the Bush Presidency.

I actually maintained support for Pres. Bush until this last year and a half or so. When he stood by his people and held tight against the unwavering left-wing, I was a vocal supporter. Now that he's rolling over to appease the left, his old supporters have left him and he still does not please the Dems. When will the polititions learn that when you do something to please your opponent, you lose your base and your opponent just screams for more?
