78th Annual Academy Award Nominations

I was delighted that, as expected, Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix were nominated for their portrayals of June Carter and Johnny Cash in WALK THE LINE. It was baffling, however, that WALK THE LINE did not receive a Best Picture nomination. And how is it that WALK THE LINE has such acclaimed lead performances, but no Best Director nomination for James Mangold?

I find it regrettable, in general, that uplifting quality films such as WALK THE LINE, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, and CINDERELLA MAN were passed over for Best Picture in favor of films adored by the Hollywood left, such as BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, MUNICH, and HUSTLE AND FLOW.

Laura,

Does this surprise you? I used to love watching The Academy Awards-- Bob Hope hosting and even later with Billy Crystal... All the glamour and sophistication (minus wardrobe malfunctions)...

Maybe I have gotten old and cynical...or maybe I just see Hollywood for what it really is...

Case in point: I made my husband watch The Best Years of Our Lives a couple of weeks ago... Winner of Best Picture 1946 (I think that is the correct year) I was blown away by all the socialist rhetoric that was woven into the dialogue... I loved that movie... I'll never be able to enjoy it again... (unless of course, I become a Socialist...)

Enjoy watching the State of the Union!!

No surprise (grin), but as a movie lover, it's still sad...

I haven't seen BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES in many years. I'll have to check it out again and see how it strikes me. Really like the cast (Andrews, Loy, Wright).

Back to the SOTU! :) Thanks, Laura
